From selling schmaltz herring out of barrel on the LES to a horse-drawn pushcart, in 1914 Joel Russ opened his first brick & mortar restaurant on Orchard St. In 1920, he moved around the corner, where the original store is still located. He was the first business owner in the U.S. to have "& Daughters" in its name. 4 generations and 100 years later, Russ & Daughters opened their location in Carnegie Hill at the Jewish Museum and has earned historic and near universal acclaim. Their herring is legendary. Their brunch is on Oprah's favorites list!
